Violin Eruption

A customer of mine today bought a Boss GT-Pro. Naturally, I asked how much guitar recording he was doing. Turns out, he isn't. Actually, he is writing a symphony for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and this effects unit is for violin. Wow, that's going to be killer! I can't wait to hear what he comes up with.

I was thinking about that tonight, and with the few minutes I had before bed, got a little experimental in my web surfing.

The result was running across Bobby Yang (this is not the customer of which I spoke earlier), who I've never heard of before. He is a brilliant, classically-trained rock violinist who doesn't use electronics - no pedals, just the instrument.

As a young teen, I was of course blown away with the rest of my generation at the virtuosic playing of Edward Van Halen on his debut album. Especially pyrotechnic was the solo entitled "Eruption," spotlighting Eddie's playing in a way no one had before.

Well, if you're familiar with Eddie's version, you simply have to listen to Bobby Yang playing it on the violin. Holy cow!
